Infection Control Faucets

Hygiene has never been more important in an age where fatal strains of viruses and bacteria can pop up from anywhere and spread throughout the globe in mere days. Hand hygiene is one of the best ways to combat the spread of infectious disease and keep people safe. Infection control faucets and properly designed public restrooms can go a long way toward maintaining hand hygiene.

Infection Control Faucet Options

Sinks can harbor harmful microbes that cause disease. Designers and architects should pay close attention to the type of sinks they plan to install as well as the materials. Stainless steel is common in industrial kitchens, hospitals, and food preparation facilities, while public restrooms have fixtures available in a wide variety of materials.

When infection control is a top consideration, builders tend to choose solid surface fixtures cast from a single piece of material. A solid surface does not have crevices where mold and bacteria can hide and is easier to clean and maintain. In addition to a one-piece mold, the surface is treated with antimicrobial agents to kill bacteria.

Infection control faucets have a similar construction. Infrared sensor, push or lever faucet controls make it easy to turn the water on and off. Touchless sensor faucets are ideal for optimum hygiene and allows the easiest activation. Push and lever operated faucets are great for one-handed use.

Faucets with disposable spouts are excellent for infection control in hospitals, care homes, nursing facilities, and patient rooms. The faucet itself is made from stainless steel or antimicrobial material and operated by push, lever, or sensor. However, the spout is disposable and can be replaced after a number of uses.

Infection Control Faucets and ADA Compliance

Besides infection control, sinks and faucets should also be ADA compliant. Faucets should be push, touch, electronic or lever operated. They should be operable with one hand without tight grasping, pinching, or twisting of the wrist. Users shouldn’t have to exert more than 5 pounds of force to use the faucet.

The height and reach ranges must also comply with ADA standards. Faucets and other accessories should be installed at a maximum of 48 inches high (except those installed over obstructions) and up to 20 inches deep. The reach range must be 44 inches if the reach depth is more than 20 inches deep.

Meanwhile, sinks should be installed no higher than 34 inches from the floor with a knee clearance that measures 27 x 30 x 11-25 inches. There must be clear floor space and insulated pipes under the sink.
